Three times HOMESPUN FAIR in 2012

Dear fellow stallholders, vintage crazy customers and lovers of all things vintage, handmade and homespun, Jane and I would like to wish you all a very Happy and Prosperous New Year! We hope you had a peaceful and joyous time and are ready to start afresh into another vintage season.

We have been busy with organising and are now proud to announce that in the future - and as long as you happily join us in Cornwall - there will be three HOMESPUN FAIRs in Portscatho each year. For 2012 the dates are set, the hall is booked, good weather has been ordered and we invite you to come along

on Easter Monday, April 9th 2012 for our HOMESPUN EASTER FAIR
on August 5th 2012 for the HOMESPUN SUMMER FAIR and last but not least
on November 18th 2012 for the also well established HOMESPUN CHRISTMAS FAIR.

Put these dates into your diary and treat yourself with a fabulous day out in our pituresque village at the seaside rummaging through lovingly arranged stalls full of vintage treasures, meeting soulmates and enjoying a cup of tea or coffee accompanied by handmade cakes - the only thing not so vintage.

Christmas Fair is knocking at your door!

With only just two weeks to go it's time to remind you that on Sunday 27th of November 2011 from 10.30 till 3.30 at the Portscatho Memorial Hall Jane and I will be hosting the first HOMESPUN Christmas Fair.

We are very excited about the range of wonderful vintage items our stallholders will have on offer, from beautiful tea sets and toys to vintage clothing, linens and even small bits of furniture, not to mention the wonderful creations many of our stallholders make from vintage and antique pieces such as bags, jewellery, decorations, cards and handmade Cornish toiletries.

And if all that shopping tires you out take a rest and some refreshments in our Vintage Tea Room where you can sample delicious home made cakes provided by the stallholders. This has proved so popular that some customers come just to buy cake! All the profits made from the teas go to the Cornish Wildlife Trust who will also be having a stall at the fair.

So if you love Vintage this is the place to buy gorgeous unique Christmas presents or just to treat yourself.

Jane (Jane and the happy Crow) will have her usual selection of small furniture, vintage toys and unique finds and I will be selling on my stall (treutmade) a new range of handmade bags, beaded bags, sewing boxes etc.

The Portscatho Memorial Hall is located on the hill between Portscatho and Gerrans. After turning off the main road signed for Portscatho, Gerrans and St Antony's take the next left for Portscatho and follow the road into the village till you come to a T junction (with a small private road opposite). Turn right up the hill and the hall is about 200 yards on your left. For detailed maps and/or information how to reach Portscatho you could use Google maps with postcode TR2 5HR or please take a look at our blog/website : http://homespunfair.blogspot.com/2011/04/how-to-get-to-portscatho.html

There might be some spaces in the car park to the side of the hall. Alternatively there is a car park on your left when you drive into the village or a free car park at the top of the hill down the lane just before the pub "The Royal Standard" on your left.

Jane and I want you to join us from 10.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. and display all your gorgeous goodies or just come along and have a good day out and find Christmas presents for your loved ones. We will indeed try to set up a winterly and quite festive feeling to that fair.

Yes, Sunday came and went in a colourful blur, with talented craftswomen from all over the country coming together in Portscatho to share their passion for creating vintage style with locals and visitors alike. This was the scene just before the doors opened to the public at 10.30am; stallholders chatting and making quick purchases from each others' tables.

Summer Homespun!

Portscatho Memorial Hall

So, our annual Summer Homespun Fair is almost upon us - only three days to go and we're getting very excited! Just thought I'd give you all a little taste of what you can expect to find when the doors open at 10.30am sharp on Sunday (get there early!)

One of our regular exhibitors, Liz aka 'The Washerwoman', makes frequent trips to France and brings back loads of vintage goodies including Textiles, Haberdashery, Kitchenalia, Pictures, small items of Furniture etc. She has been in the business long enough to know where to find all the best stuff, so that's great for us!

It would be fair to say though that her specialism is in vintage and antique English and French textiles and clothing. If you're into that kind of thing then be sure to seek her out.

Newcomer to the Fair is Bridget from 'The Fluffy Slug' (named after her beloved cat!). Bridget stitches the most exquisite cushions and bags from french linen and pretty vintage fabrics.

She also creates these framed collages incorporating all sorts of old ephemera such as vintage lace, buttons, dried flower heads, ribbon, sepia photographs...... Each one a unique keepsake to treasure.

These lavender filled hearts are made from old lace and trims and French linen.

Bridget also creates unique cards from papers and trims.

Gertie from 'Treutmade' has jointly organised this year's Homespun with Jane of 'Jane and the Happy Crow', and both will have their usual array of handmade and vintage delights. Gertie has an amazing collection of fabric 'Suffolk Puffs' which will be on sale at the Fair. I for one can't resist them! There will also be a number of vintage children's toy prams and cot beds for sale as well as her new collection of 1940's fabric zip bags.

Leonore will be on the stage again with a veritable cornucopia of things designed for the keen crafter, from boxes of pearl-headed pins, button cards, vintage French fashion magazines, old keys, old jewellery, etc etc.

These are just a few of the exhibitors who will be at Homespun, be sure to come along and enjoy the day!

Our Vintage Tearoom will once again be offering mouthwatering cakes, buns and biscuits all made by the stallholders for your delectation, proceeds from sales go to The Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

Please remember that the majority of the stallholders can only accept cash or cheques; there is however a cash machine located at 'Ralphs' Foodstore in the village Square.

My shop 'The Sea Garden' in Portscatho will be open on Sunday from 12 noon till 4pm if you need even more of a vintage fix - it's just a short stroll down the hill from The Memorial Hall.

NEW DATE FOR NEXT HOMESPUN. SUNDAY AUGUST 21ST.

Hello all, due to double bookings for the hall we are having to change the date of the August fair from the 7th to the Sunday the 21st of August. We hope that you will still be able to come along. We have some new stall holders taking part so even more goodies for you to peruse! There will be more about them and our regulars in the next post.
If you would like to apply for a stall please let us know as we may be able to squeeze in a few more. The fees are £35 for a 6ft table, £45 for an 8ft and £60 for a 12ft. Just leave a comment and we will get back to you.

Homespun Easter Fair

Greetings to all who read this blog! Hope you all spent a joyous Easter Weekend basking in the sunshine. Last Monday saw our second Easter Homespun Fair, and what an enjoyable day it was, huge thanks to all the lovely stallholders who travelled down to Portscatho with their vintage and handmade wares to make the day such a success.

And just look at the cakes!!!!! The best yet I think! I will have to check with Jane on the exact figure but I think we raised over £180 for The Cornwall Wildlife Trust. So many, many thanks to you all for baking such delicacies.

How to get to Portscatho

Just a few days to go now before 'HOMESPUN' on Easter Monday, at Portscatho Memorial Hall, 10.30am - 3.30pm. For those of you not familiar with where Portscatho is situated, I thought I would post up a few maps with directions so that you can find us more easily on the big day!

Firstly, a general map of Cornwall showing Portscatho in relation to Truro

and now a more detailed map showing The Roseland Peninsula.

Directions from TRURO: Head out of Truro on the A390 towards St. Austell and through Tresillian and onto the Probus bypass. Look out for signs for Tregony, Veryan and St. Mawes and take the A3078 turning right. Pass over the bridge at Tregony, carry on through Ruan High Lanes and keep going until you reach the hamlet of Trewithian. Turn left at Trewithian signposted Gerrans, St. Anthony Head and Portscatho. Then take the next turning left signposted Portscatho. There will be signs for the Fair on the road.

Directions from ST. AUSTELL: Head out of St. Austell on the A390 Truro road, pass through Grampound and turn left at Trewithen roundabout onto the Probus bypass. Look out for signs for Tregony, Veryan and St. Mawes and take the A3078 turning left. Pass over the bridge at Tregony, and continue as per directions given above.

If you are travelling from FALMOUTH direction an alternative way to reach The Roseland is across on the King Harry Car Ferry at Trelissick Gardens, B3289. Ferries are every 20 minutes. Once across continue on the B3289 as far as St. Just-in -Roseland and then turn left onto the A3078 signposted Tregony. When you reach the hamlet of Trewithian turn right signposted Gerrans, St. Anthony Head and Portscatho.

Hasn't the weather been wonderful! Let's hope it continues over the weekend and Monday so that all you lovely people planning to come to Homespun can really enjoy a nice day out at the fair and at the beach!

All the stallholders coming to the fair will be bringing home-baked cakes and other goodies for your delectation, and all proceeds from the sale of tea, coffee and cakes is going to be donated once again to the Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

The emphasis of HOMESPUN is very much on recycling, whether it be the sale of good quality vintage homewares, clothing, toys, collectables and ephemera, or the sale of hand-crafted items which have been made either wholly or in part from recycled or found materials. Above all you are guaranteed to find something different from that on the high street. Hurrah! Please remember to bring cash or a chequebook with you as the majority of stallholders will not be able to accept payment by credit or debit card. There is a cashpoint in the village shop. I thought I would give you a little run down of who has booked (so far) to come and sell their wares on the big day - 25th April

Jane will be hosting of course, with her usual selection of delightfully nostalgic children's toys, puzzles, cards and homewares.....

Kirsty Elson is a regular at Homespun and uses textiles, driftwood and other found bits to produce these wonderful creations.....

Pictures made entirely from torn paper are her latest masterpieces...

Sarah Drew will be exhibiting for the first time at Homespun. Her necklaces, tiaras and brooches are all created from wire, beads and old lace with vintage pieces
of jewellery forming the star attraction.

Gertie will be there too of course, with a mouthwatering selection of beaded vintage bags, Art Deco accessories, handmade recycled textile pieces and crocheted items, such as these purses perfect for a mobile phone...

and her latest craze, crocheted pebbles!

Helen from "Rosie's Armoire" will be heading down to exhibit with us all the way from Blackpool (phew!), here are a few of her tempting creations....

Purses, cushions and hanging kitchen bags printed with old postcards and document images.

Jane, Gertie and I would like to wish all you Homespun Fair bloggers out there a very Happy and Prosperous New Year!

I just had to share this photo of the wonderful creature character that I bought from Jenny Mustill at the last Homespun Fair in August. As you can see she has made herself very comfortable on a paisley eiderdown in my studio!

We were very sorry to have to cancel the event which was due to take place today, but as December approached we all realised that we were going to have family visiting over the Christmas week and fellow stallholders were most probably too, and it's a lot to ask people to make such a commitment to come all the way down to our tiny Cornish village in the depths of winter and at such a busy time......... As it turned out with all the snow and ice up country some of you would not have been able to reach us anyway, so, all in all I think we made the right decision.

Looking forward to Spring 2011 we will be holding the next Homespun Fair on Easter Monday, April 25th, so any of you wishing to participate please let us know by email ( theseagarden@btinternet.com). If you have not exhibited with us before please also email some photos of what you intend to sell. Spaces are limited so reply asap!

The success of the fair is all down to the hard work and effort put in by the stallholders and the enthusiasm of the customers who come to buy. So thank you all for your support of our venture over the past year, we really appreciate it!

Winter Fair

Gertie and I are organising a Winter Homespun to be held on Wednesday 29th December from 12.30 till 4.00. Just a little 'do' to brighten the darkest days of winter, so when the high street sales are a bore with the same old same old you can come along and browse beautiful stands brimming with unique vintage items not to be found in the shops. We will not be doing tea and cake, instead we will be serving home made biscuits with a warm mulled apple drink, yum!

Only three days now till you are all guaranteed a GRAND DAY OUT! We are both getting very excited now and can't wait to welcome all the lovely lady stallholders to Portscatho Memorial Hall on Sunday. If you looked at the list Christine put up on the last post you will know that you will find lots of gorgeous things to buy and its not too early to start thinking about Christmas!! We are all baking away to provide you with scrummy home made cakes to have with a tea or coffee when you need a break from shopping.

There will be a handout at the door of a floor plan with all the stall holders and their contact details and what they sell. It will help you find ladies you might have bought from before and some that are new to the fair. Don't forget when you come in that there is another room of goodies at the back of the stage.

Just a note to all of you coming to the fair, please bring cash or a cheque book with you as none of us can take credit cards. There is a cash machine in 'Ralph's' (the mini supermarket) in Portscatho but it does charge a fee, otherwise the nearest cash point is in St Mawes.

Next Fair August 8th

Here we are again planning the next Homespun Fair! It will be on August 8th at the Portscatho Memorial Hall. 10.30 to 4.30 and as usual there will be homemade cakes and tea served all day. All the profits from the teas will go to the Cornish Wildlife Trust.

We are already fully booked and we will list the stall holders and links to their blogs or websites early next week. Sorry but I need to check all the addresses. We have 22 ladies selling all sorts of lovely stuff! I am sure you will all enjoy yourselves and pick up some great treasures, from vintage clothing to textiles, toys to china, driftwood art to vintage collages and not forgetting our ever popular locally grown plants and cut flowers from Suzanne at the Blue Carrot. In all a great day and if we can rely on the summer weather dont forget a stroll down to the beach.

We are also starting a line in Postcards (image above) using our poster images so look out for these when you come along or you will be able to buy them in The Sea Garden or order some from us.

Hi everyone. Only a week to go now till our second Homespun Fair. Christine and I are very much looking forward to seeing all you stall holders again.

For all you coming along to pick up some vintage and handmade treasures we can promise you a great day, with everything from beautiful handmade bears and toys to vintage clothing and haberdashery and even some lovely locally grown flowers and pot plants. And don't forget the 'Tea Room' where you can enjoy a sit down and a piece of home made cake and a cup of tea.

Hello all, the header at the top is our new Spring image for Homespun. We will be printing it as postcards to promote the Easter Fair on April 5th. DATES FOR 2010 FAIRS

Hello to all you vintage and handmakers and a very happy New Year to you. Christine and I have got our heads together and we are arranging two fairs for this year. The first is to be on Monday April 5th (which is Easter Monday) and the second is for Sunday August 8th. Both will be held at the Portscatho Village Hall.

If you would like a stand at either of the fairs just leave a comment and I will get back to you. Places are already going fast for the Easter Fair so get your skates on!

A new poster/postcard will be ready for you to advertise the Easter Fair on your blogs by the end of Next week so keep an eye on the blog.

Christine's cottage is for sale!

This is a bit cheeky of me, but my little cottage is for sale, and I thought well you never know who might be reading this blog! It's one of a pair of traditional cob and stone cottages set in the heart of Probus village, Cornwall. It was comprehensively renovated 15 years ago (works included re-timbering, re-plastering, re-plumbing, re-wiring, provision of traditional wooden casement double glazed windows and gas fired central heating). South facing, you have a wonderful view right down the village street, and the parish church is just to the left . Probus is some six miles to the east of Truro, right in the heart of Cornwall; it's a 20 minute drive to the north coast and a 20 minute drive to the south coast and the beautiful Roseland peninsula.The village is well served with all amenities for daily needs including post office, public house, primary school, doctors surgery, farm shop, social club and even a fish and chip shop!
At the rear of the cottage is a small courtyard garden, recently landscaped with gravel and paving, with wide beds filled with an abundance of herbaceous plants. the stable door leads into the kitchen. The outhouse has plumbing and electric for a washing machine etc. and makes a great shed\workshop.

It is a two bedroom cottage: this is the main bedroom, 16'6" x 8'9".
The sitting room has the original deep inglenook fireplace and built in clome oven. A gas enclosed stove now sits on the slate hearth. Beamed ceiling, double radiator and windows with lovely sills big enough to sit on.

This is the dining room, but at the moment I am using it as my sewing studio, so I'm afraid it's rather full of stuff. I had the wooden floorboards put in last winter and redecorated throughout.

The Party's Over!

The Party's over! Well not the party the fair, but to Christine and I it felt more like a party, a gathering of lovely people all selling lovely things. The atmosphere from the very beginning, waiting outside for Christine to arrive with the key to the hall, was quietly exciting the butterfly's in my tummy starting to settle down into a gentle flutter when I greeted Viv, Sue and Leonore who were ready and waiting. From then on it was a whirl of setting up and greeting bloggy friends and I cant tell you how lovely all these people are!!!!

8 o'clock to 10.30 whizzed by like five minutes, pre opening selling seemed to be going on all around me as we drooled over each others stalls and made impulse purchases, mine being Cyril a lovely little doggie from Michele (soon to be appearing on my blog). At just before 10.30 Gertie came and asked wether two families who were waiting could come in and we were off! I need not have laid awake half the night worrying that nobody would turn up to our little fair, it was busy, busy from the word go! By 12.00 we had run out of cake (Sue I made sure I got a slice of that apple cake, please get the recipe!) and had to send out for more supplies and popping round to see everyone it seemed that sales were good. Christine was here there and everywhere, I just kept seeing her little headscarfed person dashing about making sure all was well, she did not have a stand of her own but sold some of her beautiful jewellery on her friend Gertie's. The Sea Garden was open being looked after by our friend Sara who was chucked in the deep end a bit, having never worked in there before, madly taking money from eager customers tempted by the gorgeous stuff on offer. Thank you Sara.

Well now I think the photos should take over for a bit so here we all are setting up and enjoying the day.

Outside Suzanne from the Blue Carrot Market Garden was selling some of her lovely flowers and home made preserves.

Looking in, a quiet buzz of activity as lovely stuff was taken from boxes and laid out for your delight.

All finished, ready and waiting. Please let me apologise here because not all of the stands are shown, some I did not manage to snap others the photos did not come out at all well, so I am sorry if yours is not on here, they were all lovely.

So many lovely things. We had a wonderful day and the feed back from you other ladies was very positive, we so enjoyed seeing you all again the only sad thing was not having enough time to have a really good chat. The hall looked very bare when you had all left and the tidying up done, we thank Gertie and her family for all their help setting up, doing the teas and clearing up. It all felt like the end of a jolly good party, hope you felt the same!

Christine and I would like to ask for any feed back you could give us that would help any future fairs run even better.

Mosaic mirrors made from sea glass and china and painted decorations. Cynthia's gallery in Portscatho will be open on Sunday so do go and have a look around.

Lots of vintage toys including Noddy! Michele's hand made assemblage boxes and her lovely badge cards.

Don't forget there will also be home made cakes and tea available all day and Suzanne from the Blue Carrot Market Garden will be selling her delicious jams and chutneys and bunches of flowers from her garden.

How to find us.

This is a copy of a google map. On the A390, look for signs for Tregony and St Mawes, head for St Mawes till you get to Trewithian and then turn left for Portscatho. There will be signs for the fair at Trewithian then follow the arrows to the Hall.

There is parking next to the Hall. There is also parking at the beach car park (about where the middle arrow is on the inset map) this is a pay and display and free parking at the car park at the top of the hill in Gerrans. You can also park in the Square in Portscatho but that is only one hour parking and you will need more than that!

Christines first blog!

Well, this is my first ever blog! The picture above shows my little shop in Portscatho called 'The Sea Garden', which I have been running now for the past eight years. For those of you who will be coming to the 'Homespun Fair' (All of you I hope!) Sara has very kindly offered to open it for the afternoon (as obviously I can't be in two places at once), so you will be able to go inside and see all the gorgeous things on offer! It is just a stones' throw away from the sea, I can't believe how lucky I am to be in such a nice village where everyone is so friendly and kind.

Earlier this year I spent about four weeks painting my dining room and turning it into a sewing studio. I only use recycled and vintage fabric to make the cushions and bags and pictures that I sell in my shop, and I love old buttons and lace and ribbons - it all gets stored away in little boxes until the right thing comes into my head as to what to use it for. On the table is the rag rug which I started to make on the day course run by Jane at Golden Mill. A rag rug is great for using up all those scraps you get left with and clothes which no longer fit!

I am concentrating on making jewellery for the Fair at the moment - these two images show a charm bracelet and necklace using freshwater pearls, silver charms, and vintage buttons, a tiny key,a locket.

This is the other type of necklace I'm working on - with beads and a leather strap, in lovely soft colour combinations.

Location, Location!

This is the location for the Home Spun Fair. The Memorial Hall in Portscatho, unlike a lot of village halls it has big windows down the sides which means its lovely and light and airy. Of course there will be bunting outside along with a fresh flower stand run by The Blue Carrot market garden also selling jams and chutneys.

This is the view down the road from the Hall, just a short stroll if you want to take a break on the beach between shopping!

And when you get to the bottom heres the beach. Come and enjoy.
